What is a "Bifyj"?
In the Silesian dialect, "bifyj" means a kitchen cupboard. "Bifyj" is part of Silesian identity, as this piece of furniture was present in the kitchens or dining rooms of every house and flat in Upper Silesia. The "bifyj" was used to store food products, festive delicacies, tableware, tablecloths, etc
The Idea Behind the Trail
The main goal of establishing the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail in 2015 was the desire to save the traditional cuisine of Opole Silesia, as well as its history and local customs from being forgotten, and to promote local dishes, traditional products, and producers from the region.
Who is it For?
The "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail is aimed at people seeking high-quality regional and local delicacies and unique specialities, as well as those wishing to discover the culture and tradition of Opole Silesia. Ultimately, it is for people who appreciate good food and simply want to "eat well".
Restaurants
The Trail currently includes 18 certified restaurants and 1 confectionery from the Opolskie Voivodeship, offering traditional dishes based on unique regional products. The restaurants vary in terms of décor, history, and location. However, they are united by a reference to regionalism in every aspect of their operation.
Certification process
To become a member of the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail, catering establishments undergo a certification process led by a Chapter appointed by the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation – the Trail operator.

Established by the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation in 2015, the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail is a fascinating journey across the region, full of diverse flavours. After all, today's tourist trails are no longer just mountain hikes or bus tours visiting the most well-known and frequented attractions one by one. Apart from talking about holiday photos, we increasingly discuss what captivated our palates and where, recommend worthwhile dishes, and sometimes even try our hand at home cooking, faithfully attempting to recreate dishes according to recipes passed down from generation to generation. The desire to save the traditional cuisine of Opole Silesia from oblivion, along with its history and the local customs that accompanied its creation, became the main inspiration for establishing the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail.

Following the Culinary Trail allows visitors to explore the Opolskie Voivodeship's regional side by showcasing the customs associated with it. The establishments on the Trail include historic sites that are part of the region's history, businesses that have been run with passion for generations, as well as newly established restaurants. United by flavour and love for Opole traditions
The "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail brings together catering establishments that serve dishes and/or products that are on the List of Traditional Products of the Opolskie Voivodeship, and thus are not associated with the culture and cuisine of other countries. Additionally, these establishments must successfully complete the certification process, which is evidenced by a special logo created for the Trail. All of this contributes to a reliable culinary offer, strictly related to the region, and ensures the originality of the traditional dishes from Opole Silesia. Dishes such as Śląskie Niebo (Silesian Heaven), Siemieniotka (Hemp Seed Soup), Wodzionka (Bread Soup), Kartoffelsalat (Potato Salad), or sweets: Śliszki (Sweet Potato Dumplings), Kołocz Śląski (Silesian Cake), or Krajanki (Sliced Cakes) are just a small part of the extensive List of Traditional Products of the Opolskie Voivodeship that can be sampled in the restaurants on the Trail.
Our awards and distinctions
In parallel with the activities supporting the creation of the Culinary Trail, the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (OROT) published "Opolski Bifyj – a friendly culinary guide," containing descriptions of the places and establishments on the Opolskie Voivodeship Culinary Trail, as well as culinary recipes, trivia, tales, legends, and suggestions for visiting selected tourist attractions. The publication has enjoyed immense popularity among both tourists and residents of the region. It is also available for download on our website. The publication won the main Magellan Award in the competition for the Best Tourist Publication of 2015 in the Culinary Guide category and was distinguished in the "Roses of the Regions" contest during the Tour-Salon trade fair in Poznań in 2015, as well as in the "Opole Brand" Competition for 2016 in the Regional Promotion category.
The year 2016 saw the release of another publication – "Opolski Bifyj Culinary Trail. Information Guide" – which, unlike the previous, extensive guide, is a more concise, pocket version.
The publication received a distinction in the pocket guide category in the Magellan Award 2016 competition and second place in the Guide category in the "GLOBalny Format 2017" Competition during the GLOBalnie trade fair in Katowice in 2017.
The publication received an honourable mention in the pocket guide category in the 2016 Magellan Prize competition and second place in the Guide category in the „GLOBAL Format 2017” competition during the 2017 GLOBalnie fair in Katowice, Poland.
The Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (OROT) became a laureate of the Opole Brand 2019 contest in the Regional Promotion category for the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail. The award is granted by the Marshal of the Opolskie Voivodeship.
On 20 October 2022, the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail received an award in the competition for the Best Tourist Product of the Opole Voivodeship, the OROT Certificate, and was entered into the National Competition - Certificate of the Polish Tourist Organisation.
On 15 December 2022, the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail received the Polish Tourist Organisation Certificate for the Best Tourist Product 2022. This is a major event for the tourism and catering industry of the Opolskie Voivodeship, as our Culinary Trail was included among the best 10 tourist products from all over Poland! We would like to congratulate all winners and those distinguished, and invite you to discover our Trail, become its member, and help us set the best possible course for tourism development in the region – with our culinary tourism at the forefront!
On 18.09.2025, the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail won the Wawrzyn Polskiej Turystyki Kulinarnej award. This prestigious award is given as part of a nationwide competition organised by the Vistula School of Tourism and Hotel Management, which aims to identify and promote the most interesting initiatives related to culinary tourism in Poland. The awards were presented at the King John III Palace Museum in Wilanów.
Procedure for joining the Opolskie Voivodeship Culinary Trail
Catering establishments meeting the following requirements may become members of the Opolskie Voivodeship Culinary Trail:
- Catering establishments exclusively from the Opolskie Voivodeship.
- Catering establishments having in their menu dishes and/or products included in the List of Traditional Products of the Opolskie Voivodeship (the list is available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development or can be downloaded below);
- Restaurants featuring at least 4 regional cuisine items/dishes/products in their menu, which make up a lunch set, e.g. soup, main course, dessert, or possibly a starter.
- Other catering establishments (e.g. confectioneries) that offer at least 3 items/dishes/products from the List of Traditional Products of the Opolskie Voivodeship.
The procedure for joining the Opolskie Voivodeship Culinary Trail is as follows:
- Completion and submission of the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (OROT) membership declaration (downloadable file below).
- Completion and submission of the Opolskie Voivodeship Culinary Trail membership declaration (downloadable file below) along with the necessary documents:
- Company registration documents (current National Court Register (KRS) excerpt, any required resolutions on joining).
- Application form to initiate the certification process for the establishment (included in the Trail membership declaration).
- Description of the traditional items/dishes/products served in the establishment.
- Undergoing certification, which is carried out by a specially appointed Certification Commission.
- Achieving a minimum of 40 points during certification
