What is a "Bifyj"?
Bifyj in Silesian dialect means kitchen sideboard. Bifyj is an association with Silesianness, as there was such a piece of furniture in the kitchen or dining room of every home and flat in Upper Silesia. The Bifyj was always used to hold foodstuffs, festive delicacies, tableware, tablecloths, etc.
The Idea Behind the Trail:
The main goal of establishing the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail in 2015 was the desire to save the traditional cuisine of Opole Silesia, as well as its history and local customs from being forgotten, and to promote local dishes, traditional products, and producers from the region.
Who is it For?
The offer of the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail is addressed to people looking for regional and local delicacies of high quality, unique specialities, as well as to those wishing to learn about the culture and tradition of Opole Silesia. Finally, to people who appreciate good cuisine and simply want to „eat well”.
Restaurants
The Trail currently includes 18 certified restaurants and 1 confectionery from the Opolskie Voivodeship, offering traditional dishes based on unique regional products. The restaurants vary in terms of décor, history, and location. However, they are united by a reference to regionalism in every aspect of their operation.
Certification process
To become a member of the "Opolski Bifyj" Culinary Trail, catering establishments undergo a certification process led by a Chapter appointed by the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation – the Trail operator.
Idea of the Opole Bifyj culinary trail
Created by the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation in 2015, the Culinary Route of the Opole Voivodeship „Opole Bifyj” is a fascinating journey through the region, full of diverse flavours. After all, today's hiking trails are no longer just mountain hikes or point-by-point bus tours of the most famous and besieged attractions. Following the Culinary Trail makes it possible to get to know the Opole Region „from behind the scenes”, the regional one, by presenting the customs associated with it. The venues along the Route are both historic places and those inscribed in the history of the region, facilities run with passion for generations, as well as newly created restaurants. Connected by taste and love of Opole's traditions
The „Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail” brings together catering establishments that have dishes and/or products in their menu that are on the List of Traditional Products of the Opole Voivodeship, and thus are not related to the culture and cuisine of other countries. and culinary traditions of other countries. In addition, these facilities must successfully pass the certification process, and the proof of this is the signing of a special logo created for the Route. All of this adds up to a credible culinary offer that is closely linked to the region and ensures the originality of the traditional dishes from Opole Silesia tasted by tourists. Dishes such as Silesian Heaven, Siemieniotka, Wodzionka, Kartoffelsalat or sweets: Śliszki, Kołocz Śląski or Krajanki, are only a small part of the extensive List of Traditional Products of the Opole Region, which can be tasted in restaurants on the Route.
Our awards and prizes
Alongside activities accompanying the construction of the Culinary Route, the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation published the „Opole Bifyj - a friendly culinary guide”, containing descriptions of places and establishments along the Culinary Route of the Opole Voivodeship, as well as recipes, curiosities, legends and suggestions for visiting selected tourist attractions. The publication was very popular among both tourists and the region's inhabitants. It is also available to download in electronic form on our website. The publication was awarded the Magellan's main prize in the competition for the Best Tourist Publication of 2015 in the Culinary Guide category, awarded in the „Roses of the Regions” competition during the Tour-Salon fair in Poznań in 2015 and awarded in the „Opole Brand” competition for 2016 in the Region Promotion category.
In 2016, another publication was produced, „The Opole Bifyj Culinary Route. Informator”, which, unlike the previous, comprehensive version of the guide, serves as a pocket version.
The publication received an honourable mention in the pocket guide category in the 2016 Magellan Prize competition and second place in the Guide category in the „GLOBAL Format 2017” competition during the 2017 GLOBalnie fair in Katowice, Poland.
The Opole Regional Tourist Organisation has been awarded the Opole Brand 2019 in the category of Region Promotion for the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail. The award is granted by the Marshal of the Opole Voivodeship.
On 20 October 2022, the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail received an award in the competition for the Best Tourist Product of the Opole Voivodeship, the OROT Certificate, and was entered into the National Competition - Certificate of the Polish Tourist Organisation.
On 15 December 2022. The Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail received a Certificate of the Polish Tourist Organisation for the Best Tourist Product 2022. This is a very important event for the tourism and catering industry of the Opole Province, as our Culinary Trail was among the best 10 tourist products from all over Poland! Congratulations to all the winners and commended, and we invite you to discover our Route, become a member of the Route and create with us the best possible direction for the development of tourism in the region - with our culinary tourism at the forefront!
On 18.09.2025, the Opole Bifyj Culinary Trail won the Wawrzyn Polskiej Turystyki Kulinarnej award. This prestigious award is given as part of a nationwide competition organised by the Vistula School of Tourism and Hotel Management, which aims to identify and promote the most interesting initiatives related to culinary tourism in Poland. The awards were presented at the King John III Palace Museum in Wilanów.









Procedure for joining the Opole Region Culinary Trail
Catering establishments meeting the following requirements may become members of the Opole Region Culinary Route:
- Catering establishments only from the Opolskie Voivodeship;
- Catering establishments having in their menu dishes and/or products included in the List of Traditional Products of the Opolskie Voivodeship (the list is available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development or can be downloaded below);
- Restaurants with a menu of at least 4 dishes/dishes/products of regional cuisine making up a dinner set, e.g. soup, second course, dessert, possibly a starter;
- Other catering establishments (e.g. patisseries) which offer at least 3 dishes/dishes/products from the list of Traditional Products of the Opole Province.
The procedure for joining the Opole Region Culinary Trail is as follows:
- Completion and submission of the membership declaration of the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (file to download below);
- Completion and submission of a membership declaration for the Opole Region Culinary Trail (file to download below) together with the necessary documents:
- Company registration documents (current copy of the National Court Register, required accession resolutions);
- An application declaring the premises for the certification process (found in the Trail membership declaration);
- Description of dishes/traditional foods/products served in the establishment;
- To undergo certification, which is carried out by a specially appointed Certification Commission.
- Scoring a minimum of 40 points during certification.
